Abstract The cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 was developed by the pedigree method, from the recombination of the coffee tree H 2077-2-5-46, of the Catuaí Vermelho germplasm, with accession IAC 1110-8, from the exotic cultivar BA10. Cultivar IAC Catuaí SH3 is high-yielding, resistant to coffee leaf rust and tolerant to drought.

Abstract This work aimed to study the effective population size and genetic gain in a population of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre) and verify the possibility of using recurrent selection. The experiment comprised 25 treatments, consisting of 21 C. canephora progenies and four C. arabica (cultivars) grown in Brazil. The experimental design was a 5x5 quadruple balanced lattice, with 24 replications, with one plant per plot. Six harvests were performed in each plant. Statistical analysis was carried out using the mixed model methodology. The analysis showed high additive genetic variability, and the magnitude of the additive components prevailed over that of the dominance components. These facts revealed the plant population liability to undergo recurrent selection, whose expected genetic gains were high. Results suggest that the effective population size and inbreeding degree throughout recurrent selection cycles be monitored. During selective cycles, cloning with weak selection is required due to few progenies.

Abstract Cultivar IAC Obatã 4739 was derived from a cross between coffee tree IAC 1669-20-1 and cultivar Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62. It is short and high-yielding, rust-resistant, has large and yellow fruits, medium to late maturation, excellent cup quality, and responds effectively to irrigation.

Abstract IAC 125 RN was derived from a cross between the coffee cultivar Villa Sarchí and the Hibrido de Timor CIFC 832/2. The coffee trees are short and resistant to races 1 and 2 of the nematode Meloidogyne exigua and to all races of coffee rust, Hemileia vastatrix, present in Brazil. Brazil.

Estudou-se a divergência genética de 21 progênies de meios-irmãos - 19 do grupo Congolês e duas do grupo Guineano - de introduções do germoplasma de café robusta (Coffea canephora) do IAC. O estudo baseou-se em análises multivariadas de 14 características morfo-agronômicas, com o propósito de selecionar as progênies mais divergentes, visando à definição de população-base para posterior seleção e produção de híbridos. Avaliou-se também a importância das características discriminantes para análises de divergência, visando ao descarte das variáveis, segundo suas contribuições relativas. O experimento foi plantado e desenvolvido em campo experimental localizado no Pólo Regional do Nordeste Paulista, Mococa (SP), em blocos casualizados, com 21 tratamentos e 24 repetições. O agrupamento dos genótipos foi realizado com base nos métodos de Tocher e UPGMA. A matriz de dissimilaridade genética foi obtida por meio da distância generalizada de Mahalanobis, que serviu de base para a formação dos grupos. Os métodos empregados foram eficientes em detectar ampla variabilidade genética entre as progênies avaliadas. Vários grupos dissimilares foram identificados. As progênies IAC 2262, IAC 2290, IAC 2286, IAC 2292 e IAC 2291 são indicadas para compor programas de intercruzamentos, por terem sido consideradas as mais promissoras na obtenção de populações segregantes ou híbridos heteróticos. As características que menos contribuíram para a divergência genética foram, hierarquicamente: diâmetro da copa antes da poda, altura da planta antes da poda e área foliar.

It was studied genetic divergence of 21 half-sib progenies, being 19 of the Congolês group and two of the Guineano group, introductions of germoplasma robust (Coffea canephora), based in 14 morpho-agronomic traits and multivariate procedures. It's aims to select the lineages most divergent for definition of population-base for posterior reciprocal recurrent selection and production of hybrids. The importance of the traits for divergence was, also, evaluated by the sequential discards the variables, according its relative contributions. The trial was carry out in an experimental field located in the Pólo Regional do Nordeste Paulista, Mococa-SP, using randomized blocks with 21 treatments and 24 replicates. The datas were analyzed by Tocher and UPGMA methods. The matrix of genetic divergence was gotten on the generalized Mahalanobis distance that it served of base for the formation of the groups. The employed methods had been efficient in detecting ample genetic variability between the evaluated progenies. Some groups of similarity had been identified. The IAC 2262, IAC 2290, IAC 2286, IAC 2292 and IAC 2291 progenies are indicated to compose programs of intercrosses, being considered the most promising in the attainment of segregantes populations or hybrid heterotics. The characteristics that had less contributed for the genetic divergence had been: canopy diameter before pruning, plant height before pruning and leaf area.

Avaliaram-se 18 linhagens e duas cultivares de trigo, em experimentos instalados em condição de irrigação por aspersão, solo corrigido e adubado, na Estação Experimental de Agronomia de Tatuí (SP), em 1999 e 2000. Determinaram-se as seguintes características agronômicas: produção de grãos, altura das plantas, ciclo - em dias - da emergência ao florescimento, número de grãos por espiga, massa de cem grãos e comprimento, largura e espessura dos grãos. Correlações simples entre todas essas características foram estimadas para os dois experimentos. As geadas ocorridas na época de enchimento dos grãos, em 2000, ocasionaram em todos os genótipos de trigo redução nas produção de grãos e, na maioria dos genótipos, no número de grãos por espiga e na massa de cem grãos. Os genótipos mais altos tenderam ser menos afetados pela ação das geadas. Destacaram-se, em 1999, o genótipo 9 (BANACORA T 88) pelo porte baixo; os genótipos 2 (KAUZ*2/MNV//KAUZ), 9 e 14 (WH 542) pelo maior número de grãos por espiga e, o genótipo 3 (SAWGAI) pela maior massa de cem grãos, constituindo-se em fontes genéticas dessas características para programas de cruzamentos de trigo.

Eighteen wheat lines and two cultivars were evaluated in trial carried out under sprinkler irrigation, limed and fertilized soils, at the Tatuí Agronomy Experimental Station, State of São Paulo, Brazil during 1999 and 2000. Grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering, number of grains per spike, 100 grain weight, grain length, width and thickness were evaluated. Simple correlations between these characteristics were estimated. The occurrence of frosts at grain filling period, in 2000, resulted in grain yield reduction in all genotypes, reduction in the number of grains per spike, and also in 100 grain weight for the majority of the genotypes. The highest genotypes showed a tendency to be less affected by the frosts. The genotype 9 (BANACORA T 88) exihibited short plants; the genotypes 2 (KAUZ*2/MNV//KAUZ), 9 and 14 (WH 542) presented high number of grains per spike and the genotype 3 (SAWGAI) high 100 grain weight, in the experiment seeded in 1999. These genotypes could be used as genetic sources in crossing programs, where these traits would be desired.

Avaliaram-se, quanto à tolerância à toxicidade de alumínio, 18 linhagens de trigo introduzidas do Centro Internacional de Melhoramento de Milho e Trigo (CIMMYT), México; 18 linhagens obtidas do programa de melhoramento do Instituto Agronômico (IAC), Campinas (SP), e as cultivares IAC-24 e IAC-289, em dois experimentos realizados em laboratório, empregando soluções nutritivas, com seis concentrações de alumínio. Nesses experimentos, utilizaram-se as cultivares BH-1146 (tolerante) e Anahuac (sensível) como controles para a tolerância. Os genótipos, exceto BH-1146 e o Anahuac, foram também avaliados em dois experimentos de campo irrigados por aspersão, na Estação Experimental de Agronomia de Tatuí, em 1999. Analisaram-se a produção de grãos, altura das plantas e o número de grãos por espigueta (fertilidade da espiga). As linhagens selecionadas no IAC destacaram-se quanto à tolerância à toxicidade de alumínio em relação às mexicanas, o que demonstra a importância de se verificar a origem dos genótipos quando o objetivo for o cultivo em solo ácido. As linhagens tolerantes a 10 mg.L-1 de Al3+ na solução, tanto as mexicanas como as do IAC, podem ser empregadas como fonte para tolerância ao alumínio, particularmente as linhagens 11 (PVN"S"/3/BB/CNO"S"/ / JAR/4/ORZ/5/IAC-60) e 5 (RAC 649/IAC-120), selecionadas no IAC, que apresentaram, também, porte baixo e grande fertilidade da espiga respectivamente.

Eighteen wheat lines introduced from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico, and eighteen wheat lines selected at the Instituto Agronômico (IAC) from the wheat breeding program, plus the cultivars IAC-24 and IAC-289 were evaluated in relation to the tolerance to aluminum toxicity, in two experiments, using nutrient solutions with six different aluminum concentrations, in laboratory conditions. The cultivars BH-1146 (tolerant) and Anahuac (sensitive) were also used as tolerance controls. The same genotypes, except BH-1146 and Anahuac, were also evaluated in two trials carried out under sprinkler irrigation, at the Tatuí Agronomic Experimental Station, in 1999. Grain yield, plant height and the number of grain per spikelet (head fertility) were evaluated under field conditions. The IAC selected lines were superior for aluminum tolerance in relation to the CIMMYT lines, demonstrating the importance of genotype origin when the objective is to grow in acid soil. The Mexican and the IAC selected lines showing tolerance to 10 mg.L-1 of Al3+ could be used as aluminum tolerance source, particularly the lines 11 (PVN"S"/3/ BB/CNO"S"//JAR/4/ORZ/5/IAC-60) and 5 (RAC 649/IAC-120), selected at IAC, which showed not only aluminum tolerance but also short stature and high head fertility, respectively.
